Glossary      

  • Airtime: The duration of a successful call, that ends with the call termination.
     
  • Bluetooth: An industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs). It provides a high-speed wireless connection and exchange of information between devices like personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers, and digital cameras via a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency.
     
  • Caller Identification (CID) / Caller Line Identification (CLI): A telephony intelligent network service that transmits the caller's telephone number to the recipient's telephone equipment before the call is answered.
     
  • Colour Screen: The display standard of a mobile phone, which is often specified as the colour depth of a screen. Eg. 256k colour display.
     
  • Coverage: A geographical area wherein your handset can make and receive calls without any disturbance or call drip.
     
  • Changeable Shells: Changeable covers which protects the handset from
    dust and water.
     
  • Data Capability: A facility of transferring data from a laptop, portable fax machine, or personal digital assistant to other compatible receiver.
     
  • Data/Fax Capability: A facility to send and receive fax, data files, access the Internet to send email through the mobile phone.
     
  • Dual Band Technology: A functionality that allows a mobile phone to support two-frequency band out of the four major GSM (or TDMA) bands.
     
  • DTMF (Dual-tone Multi Frequency): Used for telephone signalling over the line in the voice frequency band to the call switching centre. Also known as Touch Tone or Tone Dialling.
     
  • Digital camera: An electronic device used to capture and store photographs electronically. These cameras do not use photographic films and are typically multifunctional.
     
  • Digital camera with Flash: An electronic device with a flash to capture any image and store photographs electronically instead of using a photographic film.
     
  • Dual Screen: The double display facility, which acts as a Caller ID equipment in various handsets.
     
  • ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute: An organization which formulates GSM and DECT standards.
     
  • EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service) : A messaging facility which allows exchange of simple graphics and tunes on EMS enables phones.
     
  • FM Radio: A broadband technology that uses frequency modulation to provide high-fidelity sound over broadcast radio.
     
  • GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication): the most popular standard for the mobile phone communication and is based on digital wireless technology TDMA. It enables the mobile users to use their phones in many parts of the world.
     
  • GPRS (General Packet Radio Service): A mobile data service available to GSM mobile phone users. It provides moderate speed data transfer by using unused TDMA channels in the GSM network.
     
  • GSM 900: The radio frequency of 900MHz frequency band which is used by
    the GSM operators for the mobile communication. Vodafone and O2 use 900 MHz band.
     
  • GSM 1800: The radio frequency of 1800MHz frequency band which is used by the GSM operators for the mobile communication. Orange and T-mobile use 1800 MHz band.
     
  • HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data): An enhancement to Circuit switch Data - the original data transmission of the GSM mobile phone system. It is three times faster than the GPRS. HSCSD provides different levels of
    error correction which can be used according to the quality of radio link.
     
  • Handsfree : an equipment to use a mobile phone without employing hands when talking or tuned to in-built stereo.
     
  • Infrared Port : a data port that uses Infrared Data Association (IrDa) as the standard for wireless communication between a computer and a mobile phone.
     
  • IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity): a unique identity number allotted to a GSM handset that can be used to block the mobile phone under certain contingency.
     
  • Integrated Camera: A built-in mobile camera with a specified resolution and zoom.
     
  • Java: an object- oriented programming language developed by Sun Microsystem and does away with low-level tools.
     
  • MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service): a standard for telephony messaging system that allows sending those messages which include multimedia objects like images, audio, video, and rich text.
     
  • Media Player: application software for playing multimedia files including audio and video files.
     
  • MP3 Player: a digital audio player device that stores organises and plays digital music files.
     
  • Motomixer: a mobile application which mixes unique ringtones to play on the polyphonic speaker.
     
  • One Touch Dialling : A mobile phone facility which allows a single key use to call-up a frequently called number. Also called Speed Dialling .
     
  • OFTEL: The Office of Telecommunication. The regulator for the UK Telecommunication Industry.
     
  • Phonebook: a mobile directory for listing and storing the names and contact numbers (other specifications like email, company's name etc., are model dependant) in the SIM card or Internal phone memory.
     
  • Polyphonic Ringtones: A ringtone that makes use of polyphony. It is usually
    a MIDI recording that specifies what instrument should play at a given time.
     
  • Predictive Text: An input technology designed for mobile phones which allow words to be entered by a single key press for each letter.
     
  • Roaming: a term in wireless communication that refers to the extending of connectivity service in a location that is different from the home location where the service was registered.
     
  • Rotating Screen: a mobile display that can rotate at its axis to cover all the angles while imaging.

     


     

  • SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module): a smart card which securely stores the key identifying a mobile phone subscriber, as well as subscription information, preferences and text messages.
     
  • SMS (Short Message Service): A service available to most of the digital mobile phones that permits the sending of short text messages between
    mobile phones.
     
  • SAR (Specific Absorption Rate): Refers to the amount of radio frequency energy absorbed per Kg into human tissue by a radio transmitter.
     
  • Talk-time: The total call time for which a mobile phone battery powers the device.
     
  • T9 (Predictive Text Input): An input technology designed for mobile phones which allows words to be entered by a single key press for each letter.
     
  • Tri Band: The three different radio frequencies which are used by the GSM operators for the mobile communication. The three frequency bands are: GSM900, GSM1800 and GSM1900.
     
  • Thermometer: a device to measure the temperature.
     
  • Voicemail: Also known as vmail or VMS. It is a centralized system of
    managing telephone messages for a large group of people and available with many mobile service providers...
     
  • Video Camera: a camera that allows capturing of video images and playback. Many mobile phone features an inbuilt video camera with different resolutions.
     
  • Video and Photo Messaging: a mobile facility which allows recording, playback and sending of video and photo messages to the other third generation mobile phones.
     
  • Video downloads: facility which allows downloading of movie trailers, news clips etc., on the mobile phones.
     
  • Video Calling: a calling facility available with third generation phones wherein you can see the called person.
     
  • Voice Memo a voice recording which serves as a reminder or a memo.
     
  • Voice Dial: a facility which makes use of a mobile user's voice to dial-up and establish a connection with the called person.
     
  • WAP (Wireless Application Protocol): An open international standard for applications that use wireless communication. It enables access to the Internet from a mobile phone or PDA.
     
  • WML (Wireless Markup Language): the primary content format for those devices that implement the WAP specifications like mobile phones.
     
  • XHTML Browser: an implementation of a hyper textual computer language standard designed specially for mobile phones and other resource-constrained devices. It enables browsing of advanced WAP pages.
